DESCRIPTION:Leader: Eric Karlin\, Professor of Plant Ecology (emeritus)\nCome explore the Sphagnum (peat moss) community of the Black Gum Swamp\, where some 12 Sphagnum species reside. This excursion will serve as an introduction to the study of Sphagnum in the field. It will focus on developing search images for Sphagnum and how to distinguish among the three subgenera present in the swamp. The day will end with the opportunity to explore the Fisher Museum. There is a boardwalk at the swamp.\nTerrain: Intermediate (much of the hike is on a woods road)\, 1.6 miles round trip\, elevation gain ≈ 120 ft.\nCapacity: 10 participants\nRegister here

Please note there are services at the Story Chapel and avoid entering or congregating there. \nFor New England Botanical Society’s 130th anniversary\, we’ll be celebrating with the ‘Dead Botanists Society’ of Mount Auburn Cemetery. The cemetery\, established in 1831\, is a National Historic Landmark and considered the first “garden cemetery” in the United States. The collection features more than 2\,500 taxa (in over 20\,000 plantings) throughout 175-acres. It is also the final resting place for several notable botanists in NEBS’s history.
