SUMMARY:Flower Visitors to the Plants of Newton and the Arnold Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard Primack\, Professor of Biology at Boston University\, Boston\, Mass.\nHybrid at 6:30pm at Native Plant Trust’s Garden in the Woods\, Framingham\, Mass.\n“Flower Visitors to the Plants of Newton and the Arnold Arboretum: Can Honeybees and Native Insects Coexist?”\nAbstract: A major question in insect ecology is whether non-native honeybees outcompete native insects\, such as bumblebees and butterflies\, or if they can coexist. Most studies on flower visitors focus on herbaceous plants; in this study we focus on woody plants at the Arnold Arboretum. For two years\, our team of scientists\, students\, and volunteers observed flower visitors at over 600 plant species at the Arboretum\, recording if insects were collecting pollen or nectar. In this talk\, I will report on the ecological and evolutionary factors affecting insect visitation patterns and what this suggests in terms of the conservation and management of native insects and plants in New England.\n\nSpecial Arrangements for May Meeting:\n\nNEBS members and guests are welcome to come early and bring a picnic supper to enjoy before the meeting\nAdmission for Garden in the Woods on Friday\, May 1\, will be free for NEBS members and guests starting at the 10 AM opening. If arriving before 5 PM\, please check in at the Visitors Center/Garden Shop. If arriving after 5 PM\, the garden gate will be closed\, but there is a call button.\nParking is available on site. If the lot is full\, you can exit the Garden and park on the odd-numbered side of any of the side streets. Please be considerate of the neighbors and don’t park on anyone’s lawn or property.\nEducation Building facilities: The presentation will begin here at 6:30 PM\, so please finish your garden tour and picnic supper before then. Members and guests may use the outdoor picnic tables on the patio before 5 PM and the indoor space after 5 PM. Restrooms are in this building and the Visitor Center.

DESCRIPTION:Leader: Scott Bailey\, US Forest Service\, Retired\nVisit and explore the floodplain forests\, oxbow wetlands\, and a floodplain forest restoration project in the Maidstone Bends region at the junction of the Upper Ammonoosuc and Connecticut Rivers. A focus of the trip will be on willow identification\, and the timing was chosen to coincide with the flowering or fruiting of most of the dozen species that might be seen.\nTerrain: Easy to moderate. Participants will not travel far\, approximately a quarter to half of a mile\, and it will be fairly flat. However\, participants should be prepared for wet and muddy conditions and should wear high boots\, waders\, or be prepared to get wet.\nCapacity: 10 participants\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Budding Botanists: Floodplain Botany of the Sudbury River\, Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge\, Sudbury\, Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Neela de Zoysa\, NEBS Councilor\, Botanist\, Instructor at Native Plant Trust\nEnjoy the wonderful vistas of the meandering Sudbury River at Weir Hill\, Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. The habitat is lush and diverse\, with floodplain trees\, swamps of buttonbush and red maple\, ferns\, graminoids and other herbaceous species. We will take a close look at these riverine plants and learn to identify some typical denizens. The location has great observation platforms\, and boardwalks for examining plants. This field trip will be geared towards beginners\, but all are welcome to join. Bring a hand lens if you own one or a magnifying glass and a packed lunch to enjoy after the field trip.\nTerrain: Terrain is mainly flat and easy on Red Maple Trail; gentle climb on Weir Hill Trail; we can take it slowly\nCapacity: 20 participants\nRegister here
