Black Gum Swamp, Harvard Forest, Petersham, Massachusetts

  • Come explore the Sphagnum (peat moss) community of the Black Gum Swamp, where some 12 Sphagnum species reside. This excursion will serve as an introduction to the study of Sphagnum in the field. It will focus on developing search images for Sphagnum and how to distinguish among the three subgenera present in the swamp. The day will end with the opportunity to explore the Fisher Museum. There is a boardwalk at the swamp.
  • Terrain: Intermediate (much of the hike is on a woods road), 1.6 miles round trip, elevation gain ≈ 120 ft.
